AEO / GEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

Optimization for AI-driven answer engines (Perplexity, ChatGPT browse, Claude search, Google AI Overview) — distinct from traditional SEO.

What it actually means

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) refer to the practice of structuring web content so AI search engines can extract, cite, and synthesize it correctly. Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking on a search results page. AEO/GEO optimizes for being CITED in an AI-generated answer. Key differences: AEO emphasizes structured data (Schema.org), direct-answer leads, FAQ sections, citation-friendly formatting, and llms.txt explicit allowlists for AI crawlers.

Distinguishing it from look-alikes

AEO/GEO complements SEO but doesn't replace it. The same page can rank well in Google traditional results AND be cited by Perplexity — they're not mutually exclusive. The structural moves that work for AEO (FAQPage schema, HowTo schema, direct-answer leads, llms.txt) often also help traditional SEO since they signal high-quality content. Vantage Digital ships AEO/GEO-optimized content at scale via the marketing engine.

Examples

FAQPage schema
Eligible for Google "People Also Ask" rich results AND citation-quality for AI engines
HowTo schema
Eligible for step-by-step rich results AND structured for AI extraction
llms.txt
Standard for declaring AI-crawler-friendly content + which AI agents are explicitly welcomed
